MoI Participates at the World Summit on the Information Society in Geneva

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, May 24th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

A delegation from the Ministry of Interior left for Geneva to participate in the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS), on Sunday. The summit will be held in Switzerland from 25 to 29 May.

The delegation includes: Lieutenant Colonel Salem Abdullah Saqr; Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al Ahmed; Major Ibrahim Humaid Al Mayahi and Captain Suroor Mohsen Al Harbi from the General Directorate of Electronics and Telecommunications Services.

As the strategic partner for the MoI, the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) extended their invitation to the Ministry to participate in the fifth summit. The summit will witness the participation of over 100 ministers and director generals representing more than 70 countries in the field of information, in addition to 10 subsidiaries of UN organizations.

During the designated state sessions, the MoI will present two working papers.  Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Abdul Rahman Al Ahmed will present the first paper entitled ‘The cyber and smart transformation initiative at the Ministry of Interior,’ related to the ITC applications and E-government category of the summit. Major Ibrahim Humaid Al Yamahi will present the second paper entitled ‘Promoting the culture of information security at the Ministry of Interior,’ related to the category of building of trust and security in using ITC.

The Director General at TRA, Mr Hamad Obaid Al Mansoori, said that the National WSIS Committee in the UAE is working in coordination with the governmental bodies to provide the necessary support to demonstrate the best technological and cyber projects and initiatives, presented by the governmental bodies in this annual international forum.

He added that the invitation to the MoI from the National Committee comes based on its keenness to highlight the commitment of the UAE in advancing the information society, and implementing the recommendations presented to the world summit in previous editions. He also mentioned that these directions are a part of the TRA’s ongoing commitment to promote the UAE’s position on the world map of the international information society, by demonstrating various leading Emirati initiatives and projects in this field.

Al Mansoori also reiterated that these efforts come within the framework of a more comprehensive vision, represented by the approach of the federal and local governmental bodies to complete the transformation toward the smart government, providing a unique experience in customer service in the region.

He pointed to the variety of opportunities presented to the governmental bodies to be included in the report of the National Committee, which is regularly presented in the world summit and includes the most prominent of the projects and initiatives, and is discussed and distributed to the delegations at the summit.

It is worth mentioning that the role of the UAE in the field of global telecommunications has witnessed a significant growth within the past few years, during which the UAE has established its leading position in this field. The UAE became a strategic partner to the efforts of WSIS by establishing the National committee to follow up on the recommendation of the summit, which had a prominent role in promoting the process of exchanging knowledge, information and experiences.

WSIS is a prestigious international platform, to coordinate international efforts related to communications, IT and digital content.

Today, after nearly 12 years after the Geneva Declaration, and the Plans of Action adopted in December, 2003; the role of the Summit is highlighted as a common ground to formulate a global vision of the field with distinct goals.
