Droidcon Dubai Gathers the Region’s Android Community

Three days of workshops and sessions brought together developers and technopreneurs

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, April 22nd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The world’s biggest android developer conference, droidcon, was held in Dubai for the first time from April 14-16 2015. Dubai Internet City was the headline partner for the event, which gathered over 300 attendees from across the region. The event showcased the latest Android advances, and featured expert speakers and people from across the tech and Android industry.

The three-day conference kicked off with Barcamp, an open mic session where developers were given 60 seconds to present their ideas on an area of interest in the tech ecosystem, be it products or services which will engage the audience. Following an audience vote, ten teams were voted to give speeches during droidcon, resulting in a number of insightful presentations on their ideas and products.

droidcon also welcomed expert speakers from Microsoft, Google, Facebook, IBM, and Skyscanner, who shared insights on the challenges and opportunities faced by local developers, the Internet of Things and modern android development.

Aside from being the first droidcon Dubai conference, this was also the first major Android event in the GCC.  Each and every speaker shared resourceful and useful information with developers, as well as designers, who play a key role in the development of the finalised product.

droidcon Dubai follows a series of events and initiatives headlined by Dubai Internet City this year, including Decode Dubai, DIC’s first hackathon, and Drones for Good, an initiative launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum at the Government Summit 2015 held at DIC. DIC is at the forefront of the National Innovation Strategy and continues to encourage innovation and creativity within the technology and ICT sector.

Commenting, Majed Al Suwaidi, Managing Director of Dubai Internet City and Dubai Outsource Zone, said;

“droidcon Dubai was a huge success, bringing together the region’s Android community to encourage innovation and the ignition of new ideas.

“Globally, droidcon has played a major role in driving innovation within ICT and more specifically the Android sector, and the Dubai edition provided the ideal platform for industry leaders to share knowledge with people from across the tech value chain, and support the growth of the Emirate’s Android ecosystem. We will continue to look at ways we can promote new initiatives and events in order to encourage innovation and creativity, and foster the development of Dubai’s tech and start-up landscape.”

Boris Jebsen, Founder of Droidcon said:

“I am very impressed to have seen such a big appetite from young people and students to enter the field of technology in Dubai. As well as encouraging students and young talent, we are committed to fostering the development of women, who have a great sense of innovation and creativity.

“With its growing tech and developer community, Dubai was the best choice for droidcon and we are delighted to have partnered with Dubai Internet City for this successful event. I am very much looking forward to the next edition of droidcon Dubai”
