Philip Morris International Comments on the Tobacco Products Directive Adoption by the European Parliament

LAUSANNE, Switzerland. - Wednesday, February 26th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE) Philip Morris International Inc.’s (PMI) (NYSE/ Paris Euronext: PM) EU Region President Drago Azinovic made the following comment regarding the adoption by the European Parliament of the Tobacco Products Directive (TPD):

“The Tobacco Products Directive adopted by the European Parliament today represents a worrying departure from the EU’s basic standards of proportionate, evidenced-based policymaking, which will further erode intellectual property rights and undermine the EU Charter where these rights are protected.

“Instead of further harmonizing the internal market, a stated objective of the Directive, measures in the TPD will make the EU less competitive and be a gift for the criminals profiting from the black market in tobacco. This will be a blow to the hundreds of thousands of people working in the legal industry and member state governments now faced with filling budget gaps.”

PayPal and Samsung Allow Consumers to Shop and Pay with Fingerprint Authentication on New Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung Galaxy S5 users can now easily and securely shop password free while mobile or in-store with millions of merchants that accept PayPal

ME NewsWire / Business Wire

BARCELONA, Spain - Tuesday, February 25th 2014

Mobile World Congress 2014

Mobile World Congress – PayPal and Samsung today announced a collaboration that will make Samsung Galaxy S5 users the first to be able to login and shop at any merchant that accepts PayPal on mobile and in-stores with only their fingerprint. The new secure, biometric feature means Galaxy S5 users will no longer need to remember passwords or login details across millions of PayPal merchants. PayPal will be the first global payments company to support Samsung’s mobile fingerprint authentication technology.

Samsung is one of the world's most trusted handset makers, with a strong presence in more than 150 countries. By using fingerprint authentication instead of a traditional login and password on the new, fifth generation Samsung Galaxy S5, launched today at Mobile World Congress, consumers benefit from an even more secure and seamless mobile and in-store shopping experience across the millions of merchants that accept PayPal.

“We spearheaded the Fast IDentity Online Alliance last year and predicted that the industry would soon move beyond passwords, and this announcement brings us one step closer to that reality,” said Hill Ferguson, Chief Product Officer for PayPal. “By working with Samsung to leverage fingerprint authentication technology on their new Galaxy S5, we are able to demonstrate that consumers don’t need to face a tradeoff between security and convenience. With a simple swipe of a finger, consumers can still securely log into their PayPal account to shop and pay with the convenience that mobile devices afford.”

PayPal provides a secure wallet in the cloud and doesn’t store personal information on the device. Customers can use their finger to pay with PayPal from their new Galaxy S5 because the FIDO Ready™ software on the device securely communicates between the fingerprint sensor on their device and PayPal’s service in the cloud. The only information the device shares with PayPal is a unique encrypted key that allows PayPal to verify the identity of the customer without having to store any biometric information on PayPal’s servers.

"We are very excited about our relationship with PayPal as it will bring one of the most trusted online payment solutions in the world to the broader mobile market," said Hankil Yoon, Senior Vice President of Mobile Product Strategy. "Together with PayPal, we expect to provide our customers with a seamless and secure experience in online shopping and payments on our new Samsung Galaxy S5."

Starting in April, PayPal fingerprint authentication on the Samsung Galaxy S5 will be available in 26 markets globally, including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, Russia, United Kingdom and United States. To watch a video of the experience, please click here.

Toshiba Develops World's Fastest Device Controller for Embedded NAND Flash Memory Module Compliant with JEDEC UFS Ver.2.0 Standard

2014 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference

TOKYO. - Tuesday, February 25th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE) Toshiba Corporation (TOKYO:6502) today announced that it has developed the world’s fastest device controller for embedded NAND flash memory modules compliant with the Universal Flash Storage (UFS) Ver.2.0 and UFS Unified Memory Extension (UME) Ver.1.0 standards defined by JEDEC Solid State Technology Association (JEDEC). An embedded NAND flash memory module integrating the controller achieves a random read performance about 10 times faster than modules compliant with the e•MMCTM [1] standard now widely used in low- to high-end mobile devices. The device controller secures a performance equivalent to that of Solid State Drives (SSDs) for personal computers in a package as small as a fingernail.

Toshiba presented the new device controller at the 2014 IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, California, on February 12.

Recent advances in CPU processing power and DRAM capacity in smartphones and tablet PCs allow users to enjoy more powerful applications, including high resolution video players and feature-rich games. Such devices also require embedded NAND flash memory modules as their main non-volatile storage. Going forward, the higher performance of embedded NAND Flash compliant with the UFS standard will secure its widespread use in high-end mobile devices.

Current embedded NAND flash memory modules are increasingly unable to store all the data required to execute commands received from the host in the on-chip RAM of their device controllers, largely because of its increasing size; the device controllers have to execute multiple reads of the command data from NAND flash memory, which slows command execution. The result is growing demand for improved random read performance and a better user experience. However, it is difficult to secure anything more than incremental improvement in random read performance, because it takes 10s of microseconds to read data from NAND flash memory.

Toshiba has developed a new device controller for embedded NAND flash memory module to overcome these issues.

The new device controller stores data for executing a command received from the host in the host-side DRAM, reducing the number of read operations from NAND flash memory. This halves the time required to process a read command. The procedure by which the device controller writes data to the host-side DRAM and reads data from host-side DRAM is compliant with the UFS UME Ver.1.0 standard, published at the same time as UFS Ver.2.0.

Toshiba has also developed a hardware engine that executes read commands received from the host in parallel and integrated it into the new device controller. It achieves more than two times higher random read performance compared with conventional technology.

These two new Toshiba technologies have realized embedded NAND flash memory modules with a device controller that attains over 60 kIOPS[2] in random read performance of 4 KB access[3]. This performance level is about 10 times higher than that of modules compliant with e•MMC Version 5.0.

The new device controller also integrates new, Toshiba-designed, analog circuit technology that enables UFS’s ultra-high-speed serial communication at 5.8Gbps per lane, which avoids any increase in power consumption.

Mobile devices with an embedded NAND flash memory module that uses the new device controller will offer higher random read performances that will improve response time in user interactions and shorter application start-up times, enhancing the overall user experience.

Sample shipping of embedded NAND flash memory modules with the new device controller are scheduled to start in the first half of CY2014.

Notes [1] e•MMCTM is a trademark and a product category for a class of embedded memory products built to the JEDEC e•MMCTM Standard specification. [2] Input / Output Per Second, number of commands to complete in 1 second. [3] Conditions are followings; number of NAND flash memory chips is 8, size of access region is 8 GB, and host latency is 1 microsecond.

ZTE Successfully Takes Over Network Operations for E-Plus Group in Germany

ZTE broadens its Service Portfolio in Europe

ME Newswire / Business Wire

BARCELONA, Spain - Wednesday, February 26th 2014

Mobile World Congress 2014

ZTE Services Deutschland GmbH, a ZTE Group company, has taken over the responsibility for the roll-out and the network operation of the E-Plus mobile communications network as part of a comprehensive managed services contract signed last year. ZTE completed a smooth and trouble-free transition of the network operations in early January 2014. The managed services contract between ZTE and the E-Plus Group is the largest of its kind in Europe and provides an outstanding opportunity for the future growth of ZTE in Germany and Europe.

After months of careful preparation and coordination by a professional transition management team, ZTE implemented the take-over of E-Plus network operations during just a single night in early January 2014. During that night, ZTE migrated the whole IT infrastructure from the previous service provider, with their support, to a ZTE data centre. In the context of the managed services contract ZTE also implemented a completely new spare parts management system. Additionally, ZTE has already deployed some new software tools including its innovative ZSmart platform. ZSmart was developed by ZTE Soft Technology Co. Ltd. – a subsidiary of ZTE Corporation - to replace former applications such as the field force management programme. E-Plus Group’s mobile customers experienced no interruptions or disruption to service during the transition of the network operations.

"Since 2009, ZTE has supported the expansion of our powerful high-speed network that offers all our customers simple, reliable and rapid access to the mobile internet," said Andreas Pfisterer, CTO of E-Plus. "E-Plus and its customers benefit from the synergies arising from the supply of network technology to the construction and operation of the E-Plus network by one single partner. In its usual professional manner, ZTE managed a smooth takeover of network operations."

In order to enlarge its service capabilities and to expand its portfolio, ZTE Services Deutschland GmbH completed the acquisition of Alcatel-Lucent Network Services GmbH (ALNS) with effect from 8 January 2014. All of the 750 employees of the former network service provider of E-Plus have been successfully integrated into the ZTE organisation. In the course of the transaction, ZTE took over hundreds of supplier contracts, ensuring the continued use of the service organisation’s central and regional real estate. With the acquisition of ALNS, ZTE has increased the total number of its employees in Germany to over 900, and now has 15 branches throughout the country and is the largest ZTE organization in Europe.

“We are happy to take so many experienced people on board. The knowledge and expertise of our employees is the most valuable asset for our company,” said Betty Cui, Vice President of ZTE Corporation. “We believe in Germany as a good business location and with this investment ZTE shows its long term commitment to the country and to Europe. We started our business in Germany in 2006 and we have seen continuous growth. Now this investment marks a big step forward and a milestone for the development of ZTE in Europe. It not only helps to ensure seamless continuity in the maintenance of the E-Plus network but is the basis to take on future managed services projects for other German and European network operators.”

ZTE is the fastest growing telecommunications service provider in the world with the experience of more than 100 managed service projects worldwide. In Europe, ZTE has already demonstrated that it is capable of high performance: ZTE’s network for H3 has repeatedly been awarded “best network in Austria”.

Global Adoption of CMMI Performance Improvement Framework Continues to Rise

CMMI Institute reports record number of appraisals in 2013 and CMMI models rank as “world class” business solutions for the elevation of organizational performance as evaluated by actual users

PITTSBURGH. - Tuesday, February 25th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE) CMMI Institute announced today that a record number of Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) appraisals were completed in 2013 as organizations across the globe elevate organizational performance by adopting CMMI. The company also released the findings of a customer satisfaction survey using the Net Promoter® Score (NPS) methodology in which individuals who utilize CMMI rated CMMI as the world class means of improving organizational performance.

CMMI appraisals allow companies to measure their capability maturity against a defined framework of best practices. More than 1,600 appraisals were completed in 2013, the most ever done in one year and an 11% increase over 2012, the previous record year for appraisals. Of the 2013 appraisals nearly 40% were completed in China, where the widespread adoption of CMMI is driving economic growth and development across the region.

“For over twenty years, CMMI has been the gold standard for process improvement in companies and industries that value quality and excellence,” said Kirk Botula, CEO of CMMI Institute. “We are excited to continue to grow with our customers across international borders, where CMMI appraisals help countries to boost competitiveness in the global marketplace and establish international credibility.”

CMMI appraisal ratings are recognized around the world as the mark of capability, allowing suppliers to distinguish themselves from their competition and helping buying firms to hire suppliers that have demonstrated an appropriate level of capability. For buyers looking to work with CMMI appraised organizations, a full overview of results is published in the Public Appraisals Record System (PARS).

The De Facto Standard for Process Improvement

Thousands of companies across multiple industry sectors in 94 countries have adopted CMMI practices to elevate performance and have been appraised for capability and maturity using CMMI models. As part of today’s news, CMMI Institute is releasing the results of its first customer loyalty survey for CMMI using the NPS methodology.

1,841 users of CMMI from around the world were asked to rate how likely they would be to recommend CMMI to elevate organizational performance to a friend or colleague. The results were used to calculate an NPS, which is a measure of customer loyalty used heavily in business markets and verticals. CMMI Institute earned an NPS of 41 with the 2013 survey.

Satmetrix, the company that helped to develop Net Promoter releases benchmark reports annually on NPS score by industry. According to their most recent report, the average NPS for B2B companies is 22 NPS, and the top quartile is 39 and above.

Deborah Eastman, Chief Customer Officer at Satmetrix, states, “NPS has proven to be a leading indicator of future growth for companies because it measures the customer’s likelihood to continue to buy and refer their friends.”

Highlights from the survey include:

50% of individuals responded with a 9 or 10 while less than 9% provided a 6 or below resulting in a 41 NPS. This places CMMI in the “world class” category of business solutions as evaluated by actual users.
When asked why they would recommend CMMI, 45% of respondents cited proven performance results, while another 54% described CMMI as the de facto standard for process improvement.

“CMMI makes the world work better,” added Botula. “We are very encouraged to see the reliability, predictability, and improved performance that CMMI brings to our customers’ business.”

About CMMI Institute

CMMI Institute, a subsidiary of Carnegie Mellon University, provides models, training, consulting services and appraisal methods developed through collaboration of industry, government, and academia. Moody's Analytics Broadens CLO Solutions, Launches Structured Finance Portal

NEW YORK - Tuesday, February 25th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Moody’s Analytics, a leader in risk measurement and management, has launched a new Structured Finance Portal, aimed at providing asset managers, traders, underwriters, and portfolio and risk managers with enhanced content, increased data transparency and innovative analytics.

Initially focusing on collateralized loan obligations (CLOs), the Moody’s Analytics Structured Finance Portal serves real-time enhanced content in an easy-to-use web-based format and delivers greater operational efficiency by removing the manual process typically associated with normalizing and aggregating data.

“Moody’s Analytics is dedicated to investing in its CLO analytical capabilities to provide the market with the most cutting-edge solutions available. With our new Structured Finance Portal, users will have a clear view into the relative value of any given tranche, deal, manager, or loan,” said Andrew Jacobs, Director at Moody’s Analytics.

The web portal offers users easy access to market data. It also features manager-style and performance metrics; benchmarking and market color; loan-level content; and portfolio-level reporting and analytics. Additionally, batch cashflow analysis models help users to value their portfolios simultaneously.

Moody’s Analytics Structured Finance Portal provides a complete picture of a tranche's value with a suite of analytics and comparative metrics. The comparability algorithm helps users to find similar tranches and view the latest associated third-party market color. Portfolio managers can benchmark a tranche with a scatter plot against its cohorts across any given performance metric. Portal users can also project cashflows and view pre-run results based on market-standard assumptions.

The portal’s loan-level data, including default probabilities (EDF measures) and financial ratios, show which deals and managers are most exposed to a loan and who has been trading it recently. Also included are hundreds of metrics on manager style and performance. Users can compare managers and look at a manager’s trade behavior, loss mitigation, market perception and concentration choices.

The portal also provides access to up-to-date estimated SSFA capital charge calculations for each tranche, along with the underlying factors.

ZTE launches 4K p60 Ultra HD STB

Delivers industry’s best image quality

ME NewsWire/ Business Wire

SHENZHEN, China - Tuesday, February 25th 2014

Mobile World Congress 2014

ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) (H share stock code: 0763.HK / A share stock code: 000063.SZ), a publicly-listed global provider of telecommunications equipment, network solutions and mobile devices, has launched its 4K p60 Ultra HD set top box (STB), the ZXV10 B803, at Mobile World Congress 2014 in Barcelona.

The ZXV10 B803 is designed based on the Broadcom BCM 7252 chip, and supports the 4Kx2KP60 decoding capability, which can decode Ultra HD video with the maximum resolution of 3840x2160. In comparison to traditional HD Internet STBs, the 4K UHD STB can display more vivid and precise images to significantly enhance the user experience.

4K video technology (also named as 2160p) is a new type of resolution standard. Its UHDTV specification can deliver a resolution of 3840x2160 pixels, and the maximum Full Aperture 4K specification reaches 4096x3112. In comparison to the current mainstream 1080p resolution of 1920x1080, 4K can provide over four times the image definition quality. In the future, 4K HD TV sets will be very popular, and the 4K HD and HEVC decoding technologies will help raise the HD market tide. However, in the current market, 4K chips are mainly 4KP30 - only a few chips can support 4KP60. The ZTE ZXV10 B803 STB uses a 4KP60 chip, making it one of the first HD STBs to support 4KP60.

Fang Hui, Deputy President of ZTE, said: “As a global leader in the IPTV market, ZTE offers a complete series of Internet STB products across the range of available resolutions, and is focusing strongly on the development of high-end STB products. This 4KP60 HD STB product will help build our presence in the high end market.”

The ZTE ZXV10 B803 also supports the H.265 format. H.265 is the next generation super HD code transmission specification, which delivers encoded video using half the bandwidth of the previous generation (H.264), with the same quality. The H.265 standard will gradually replace H.264 to become the mainstream standard of the next generation of video transmission.

The ZTE ZXV10 B803 also has a powerful CPU with a processing capability of 10k DMIPS (Dhrystone million instructions per second), enabling faster processing and a better user experience in comparison to current mainstream HD Internet STBs.

The 10G PON network was commercially tested using ITU-T G.987-compliant test schemes, which testify to GPON's clear superiority in various scenarios especially for cloud-based enterprise services, video services and VoIP Centrex services.

"Jazztel needs to constantly innovate in order to provide our customers with the best possible service and ensure our competitiveness. The ZTE xGPON solution enables the expansion of our FTTH network capabilities in an effective manner," said José Miguel Garcia Fernández, Chief Executive Officer of Jazztel.

"We are delighted to have collaborated with Jazztel in completing the first 10G PON full-service commercial network test in Spain. Our 10G PON solution will enable carriers to simplify their networks, improve broadband efficiency and meet the ever increasing demand for ultra-high broadband to pave the way for revenue generation with tiered service categories. We are committed to working with carriers and other stakeholders to advance the proliferation of 10G PON applications," said Xiao Ming, vice president of ZTE Corporation.

Jazztel selected ZTE to build a national high-speed broadband FTTH network in November 2012 and the network began commercial operation in October, 2013. ZTE provided Jazztel with an end-to-end turnkey solution that includes a full range of services including equipment, engineering and maintenance.

ZTE's FTTx products and solutions, which offer end users new high-speed Internet and fixed-mobile convergence services, while catering to various scenarios with the same platform, effectively protect carrier investments and shorten time to market at the same time.

ZTE Launches Two New Firefox OS Phones in the ZTE Open Series

ZTE Open C and Open II are among the first Firefox OS phones to offer improved performance and better value

ME Newswire / Business Wire

BARCELONA, Spain. - Tuesday, February 25th 2014

Mobile World Congress 2014

ZTE, one of the top five global handset manufacturers, today launches two new innovative Firefox OS phones in the ZTE Open series with the Open C and Open II, and expects to ship over one million Firefox OS phones before the end of 2014. This furthers ZTE’s strong relationship with Mozilla that started with the first ZTE Open which was launched at Mobile World Congress in 2013.

The Open C is one of the first devices to operate on the latest version of Firefox OS and is designed to deliver a better user experience and a higher cost-performance ratio. As part of Telefónica’s long-term cooperation with ZTE, the Open C will be initially launched with Telefónica in Venezuela and Uruguay during the second quarter of 2014.

Also running the latest version of Firefox OS, the Open II is the evolution of the popular ZTE Open, which was launched in 2013 in six countries by Telefónica as well as being sold through eBay in the US and UK markets. Marrying exquisite design with the open-source, Web-based Firefox OS, the Open II provides users with a fantastic experience and a highly affordable price.

Mr. Kan Yulun, CEO of EMEA & LATAM, ZTE Mobile Devices, and Vice President of ZTE Corporation, commented, “ZTE’s strong relationship with Mozilla is in line with our focus on developing a range of devices that fit the consumer’s needs. Consumers want innovative devices that are also cost-effective and by delivering not just one, but two of the first devices with the latest version of Firefox OS, ZTE is continuing to push the boundaries and bring its customers the very latest that mobile technology can offer.”

“ZTE was one of Mozilla’s first partners to launch a Firefox OS phone, the ZTE Open, and we have worked closely together to continue advancing the new platform. The ZTE Open C and Open II are the latest examples of how Firefox OS has evolved to bring powerful open Web technologies to the smartphone,” said Dr. Li Gong, Mozilla’s Senior Vice President of Mobile Devices and President of Asia Operations.

Powerful open Web performance

Firefox OS is an open-source, Web-based operating system and offers a fresh and simple UI with a full range of features and apps, including camera, dialer, SMS and games created using HTML5 technologies. Web apps are not resource intensive, so users can enjoy higher performance at a more affordable price. The Open C supports bi-directional contact sync and linking as well as Firefox OS’s unique adaptive apps search function which allows users to search for content faster by using the search box at the top of the main home screen.

The Open C delivers superior performance with integrated connectivity as it is powered by a Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 200 processor with dual-core CPUs at speeds of up to 1.2 GHz per core from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. As Firefox OS consumes fewer resources, the 1400 mAh battery on the Open C lasts for at least six to eight hours, even when watching videos or listening to music for a long time. The Open C allows people to express their personalities in six colours: dark blue, light blue, turquoise, red, white and orange.

“Qualcomm Technologies has been collaborating with ZTE and Mozilla since the beginning of Firefox OS development, and we’re excited to be a part of the 2nd generation of Firefox device launches from ZTE,” said Jason Bremner, senior vice president of product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Firefox OS is an exciting platform that brings the power and ubiquity of HTML5-based applications to mobile devices. Coupled with the powerful Snapdragon 200 processor, for optimal multimedia and performance for superior battery life, the ZTE Open C and Open II truly deliver compelling performance to highly affordable mobile devices.”

Future of ZTE Firefox OS phones

ZTE has great confidence in the prospect of Firefox OS mobile phones. As part of ZTE’s long-term consumer-centric strategy, ZTE plans to update all series of Firefox OS phones from the low to high end. Following the launches of the Open C and dual-core Open II, ZTE also plans to release a 4.5-inch Firefox OS smartphone by 2015.

Firefox OS smartphones are key to ZTE’s growth in Europe and Latin America, as they enable it to better target the entry-level smartphone market, providing an alternative for consumers who have few proven and affordable options. The ZTE Open, launched at Mobile World Congress in 2013, was brought to market with Telefónica in Spain, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Mexico and Uruguay. It was later sold in the US and UK via eBay, initially selling out in just three days. In addition to eBay, ZTE will also cooperate with additional e-commerce platforms for both the Open C and Open II.

“Our first Firefox OS phone, the ZTE Open, proved hugely popular and we are excited to bring even more innovative Firefox OS products to market, starting with the ZTE Open C and Open II. We have huge confidence in the Firefox OS platform and expect to deliver more than one million Firefox OS phones this year alone,” ended Mr. Kan Yulun.

Smartmatic Technology Delivers Official Results in Record Breaking Time in Ecuador

QUITO, Ecuador - Monday, February 24th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- For the first time in the democratic history of Ecuador, official results were announced in one hour after polls closed. This was only possible in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, the province in which electronic voting solution was implemented using Smartmatic technology.

“The elections in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas proved that electronic voting –when implemented nationally- will provide all Ecuadorians with a secure, fast and trustworthy vote,” said Antonio Mugica, CEO for Smartmatic.

In order to test different technologies available, the Consejo Nacional Electoral de Ecuador (CNE) used Smartmatic technology to automate the elections of the Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas province.

“The electronic voting implemented in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, on top of being secure, is particularly voter friendly. This technology has been successfully deployed in hundreds of elections worldwide. That was one of the reasons this e-voting pilot was a success,” explained Alfredo Paredes, Project Manager for the CNE.

Key facts about the election

At 8:27 am, voting had started in 100% of precincts.
Only 60 minutes after polls closed, the CNE was able to announce the official results with 99% of transmission.
Besides providing the technology, Smartmatic offered a suite of integrated services to guarantee the success of the pilot. Services included: operating a support center; configuring the voting machines; defining, planning and executing the training plan for both the electorate and the staff; preparing, deploying and collecting the electronic electoral kits; among other services.
During the days preceding the elections, authorities organized three simulations in 10 poll centers in Santo Domingo de Tsáchilas. These tests encompassed voting and data transmission, and involved the participation of actual voters, political parties, CNE technicians and Smartmatic personnel.

About Smartmatic

By helping governments become more transparent and more efficient, our technology benefits societies around the world. Our automated elections make it easier for nations to let people decide their leaders securely. With over 2.3 billion ballots cast and counted, no other company has more experience helping democracies vote easily, securely and accurately. So far we’ve run verifiable and auditable elections in the United States, Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean – and there’s more to come.

We employ over 600 professionals in the US, UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Mexico, Barbados, Haiti, Brazil, Panama, Venezuela, Philippines, India and Taiwan.

CSL Switches On Hong Kong's First LTE Advanced 300 Mbps Network

HONG KONG - Tuesday, February 25th 2014 [ME NewsWire]

Mobile World Congress 2014

(BUSINESS WIRE) CSL, the first operator to launch dual band 4G LTE/DC-HSPA+ network in Asia, today joins hands with ZTE to announce the deployment of first LTE Advanced 300 Mbps1 cell site in a commercial network at the Mobile World Congress 2014, Barcelona. CSL is also collaborating with Qualcomm and ZTE on testing a new LTE Advanced CAT6 modem using the Qualcomm Gobi 9x35 chipset, which is expected to be available commercially by the second half of this year.

This is an important milestone in the evolution of LTE and the mobile industry since it signals the initial rollout of LTE Advanced 300 Mbps on the CSL commercial network, which will continue throughout the year and beyond. CSL has combined its existing licensed 20 MHz LTE carrier at 2600 MHz with another licensed 20 MHz LTE carrier at 1800 MHz, to achieve a maximum theoretical speed of 300 Mbps. ZTE’s industry-leading carrier aggregation (CA) technology helps CSL leverage its unmatched spectrum to deliver game-changing 4G connectivity for consumers and corporations in Hong Kong. CSL is the only operator in Hong Kong today with sufficient FD-LTE spectrum to achieve the optimal theoretical speed of 300 Mbps with LTE-A.

Phil Mottram, Chief Executive Officer of CSL, said, “Our focus is to always deliver the best network experience in Hong Kong to ensure that we are leading the way to greater speeds, stability and coverage for our customers by building out the network capacity and leading-edge 4G LTE capabilities. Hong Kong broadband networks are among the fastest in the world, and therefore Hong Kong customers are accustomed to the highest speeds and are demanding even more. We are creating a future ready network for Hong Kong, a network that will support the growing data needs of business and consumers in this highly mobile city.”

Christian Daigneault, Chief Technology Officer of CSL, noted “The activation of LTE Advanced at 300 Mbps in our network can be done quickly since we already have deployed dual-band LTE Software Definable Radio (SDR) hardware at both 1800 MHz and 2600 MHz at our cell sites, and the upgrade requires a software change in most cases. This makes us one step closer to the introduction of full commercial service in the second half of 2014 when devices are expected to be available.

“ZTE is pleased to support CSL in bringing next-generation mobile services to customers in Hong Kong,” said Mr. Zhang Renjun, Senior Vice President of ZTE Corporation. “The deployment of CA technology greatly strengthens CSL’s position as Hong Kong’s leading operator.”

“We’re pleased to be working with CSL in Hong Kong to deliver customers a significantly faster and better mobile user experience,” said Alex Katouzian, senior vice president, product management, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “Qualcomm Technologies’ fourth-generation 3G/LTE multimode modem, the Gobi 9x35 chipset, is the first to offer Category 6 download speeds up to 300 Mbps, while also offering improved power efficiency and requiring less printed circuit board area than previous generations.”

In 2014, CSL will continue its commitment in providing the best mobile network services in Hong Kong, and LTE-A300 is only one of the technology initiatives CSL will be rolling out this year. After announcing the network launch of Voice over LTE (VoLTE) in December 2013 in its network, CSL also intends to proceed with full commercial launch in the first half of 2014 when device and service are mature.

About CSL

CSL, established in 1983, is Hong Kong’s first mobile network operator and is also the first mobile company in Hong Kong to employ a distinctive market segmentation strategy to provide customer-focused services through its brands 1O1O, one2free, New World Mobility.

It operates a world-class GSM / WCDMA/ UMTS 900 network in Hong Kong and launched the world’s first dual band 4G LTE with DC-HSPA+ network in 2010, through which it offers comprehensive mobile and broadband services to both local and international customers. As a leading roaming operator in Hong Kong, CSL also provides customers with comprehensive international multi-media connectivity with over 590 mobile operator partners around the world.
