Online Magazine via Mobile Phones among its New Projects

The Smart Library at the Ministry of Interior (MoI) launched an initiative to encourage the Ministry’s staff to read. This drive comes as part of the implementation of the Higher Leadership’s directives to make 2016 the “Year of Reading” and to promote the concept of partnership between the Ministry and the community. This also falls in line with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Vision to make reading a common habit in the country, as well as for members of future generations.
Colonel Mohammed Hamid bin Dalmouj Al Dhaheri, Strategy and Performance Development Director General at the Ministry of Interior, explained that the Smart Library was established following the directions of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior. He continued that the Library serves the approaches adopted by the Government to transform governmental services into smart services. Al Dhaheri noted that the Library includes a wide collection of local and international information resources and is connected with renowned universities academic institutions throughout the world, via the Internet.
He also pointed out that the Smart Library enables MoI members to take advantage of the e-Learning feature by accessing lectures from Harvard, Oxford and Yale Universities, among others. The benefits of these lectures help to realize the MoI’s strategy of investing in technologies that support innovation. It also represents a specialized information center that provides reports and analysis for decision makers.
Promoting the National Agenda
Colonel Al Dhaheri also stressed the MoI’s commitment to supporting the national agenda of encouraging reading, by providing members with the best of modern, internationally-recognized scientific studies, as well as 4,200 international newspapers – all maintained up-to-date. This will enable members to keep pace with developments and use the knowledge for research and reporting.
He also noted that the Smart Library is currently developing a new curriculum subject on libraries, in collaboration with the Police College. This subject will become part of the syllabus for police officers and students at the College. These efforts fall within the framework of the initiative to further the national competencies of MoI members in the area of “Digital Library Foundations.”
New Projects
Fatima Ahmed Darwish, Director of the Smart Library at the MoI’s General Directorate for Strategy and Performance Development, announced that the Library will implement a number of new projects. These include a Smart e-Magazine that police members can access via their mobile phones or email. The new magazine examines a number of topics and educational information on innovation, leadership, and creativity. The new projects also include unifying the MoI Libraries under the umbrella of the Smart Library at the MoI, as well as building local and international partnerships with academic and research institutions.
Darwish explained that the initiative encouraging the MoI staff to read is being carried out in four key areas. The first is the “Excellent Reader,” whereby the Library’s system can identify the readers who use the resources most and the type of books being read. The second is encouraging reading aided by images, also known as data visualization. This aspect determines the most important information and reports using images, to help facilitate reading for MoI staff. The third aspect is audiobooks, where the Ministry staff can register in the Library’s friends list and the audiobooks are sent directly to their phones. Lastly, the fourth area is to create and implement the Smart Library and Innovation Labs in the Northern regions of the UAE.
“The staff of the MoI can leverage the interactive screens feature in the Library building to organize innovation workshops; enable decision makers to communicate with teams in various locations throughout the UAE via the Video Conference feature; as well as use the 3D interactive screens that allow researchers to present scientific reports to decision makers at the Ministry,” she added.
Thousands of Digital Books
Darwish reported that the Smart Library provides thousands of digital books, peer-reviewed papers and scientific magazines, in both audio and visual formats, available either at its headquarters in Abu Dhabi or through smart devices. This will allow the staff to create their own library on their mobile devices to harness these information resources and use the library at any time, from anywhere in the world.
In addition, she noted that the Smart Library also provides educational consultation services to Masters and PhD students and directs them towards the best and most accurate use of data resources to help with their research and academic studies. The Library also organizes a number of workshops on the importance of reading, the fast reading method, as well workshops on how to use the available information bank to its maximum benefit to develop individual knowledge and education.
It is worth mentioning that the Smart Library (www.smartlibrary.ae) contains various collections of digital information resources, including 14,000 digital books; 8,000 peer-reviewed scientific publications; more than 3,000 electronic newspapers, which are updated by-the-minute; and thousands of Masters’ and PhD theses from around the world. The Library also includes all the digital solutions and smart audiovisual programs necessary to support both knowledge expansion and academic improvements among the Ministry staff.
