UAE Welcomes ICDL GCC to VGT

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, December 17th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), the current chair of the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT), welcomed the International Computer Driving License (ICDL) GCC as a new member of the VGT the Global Alliance against online child abuse. The ICDL GCC was nominated by the UAE and voted by members of the VGT.

Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, Chair of the VGT said: “The accession of ICDL GCC represents an added value to the objectives that the VGT endeavors to achieve, including building active partnerships with private sector companies to protect children against online sexual abuse.”

He also asserted that the UAE has nominated ICDL GCC based on its efforts to organize international awareness summer camps for children and parents to highlight the risks of online child sexual abuse. Acting upon an initiative by the UAE, the ICDL GCC Foundation committed to integrate specialized material in its international curriculum. This newly introduced material is focused on protecting children against online sexual abuse, and raising trainees’ awareness about such risks.

Major General Al Nuaimi stressed the keenness of the United Arab Emirates to provide support the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT) in achieving its goals in child protection and cooperation in combating crimes that target children globally. Additionally, he stressed that the upcoming phase will witness additional work and cooperation via the UAE’s instrumental role and its efforts aimed at protecting children and ensuring their safety, across the Arab world, and the continent of Asia in general. “This also will be achieved by involving the largest number of law enforcement agencies within the Virtual Global Taskforce (VGT), so as to pursue their policing role, advance business and pilot programs, and mobilize the world public opinion, and religious and awareness-raising civil institutions, in a bid to reinforce concerted efforts in the field child protection against all forms of abuse,” added Major General Al Nuaimi.

The VGT Chair also noted that during the upcoming weeks, the Taskforce will announce the accession of more companies to VGT, based on the members’ voting. He also reiterated the commitment of the UAE to achieve the vision of Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, aimed at making the UAE one of the best countries in the world in child protection.

Major General Al Nuaimi also explained the mechanism of accession of any international police authority or private company to the VGT is subject to strict procedures and criteria. This aims to assess the efficiency of the nominated members and the added value they may bring to the fight against online child sexual abuse.

It is worth mentioning that the UAE has joined the VGT in 2010, and has since endeavored to redouble its efforts and fully comply with child protection in the UAE. The efforts made in the field of child protection have included: developing the necessary policies and strategies, raising the awareness of various sectors of society on the methods of preventing sexual and physical abuse against children and investigating child abuse cases.

ICDL is a global initiative aimed at spreading awareness and Information Technology (IT) to improve the skills of computer users around the world. ICDL curriculum sets out the essential concepts and skills related to the use of computers and scientific applications in the workplace and other community sectors. The ICDL program is divided into seven semesters. There is a final test by the end of each semester. To achieve the ICDL certification, trainees must complete all semesters successfully.
