PTC Adds Artificial Intelligence and Generative Design Capabilities to Enhance and Expand its CAD Portfolio with Acquisition of Frustum

Cutting-Edge Technologies to Guide Engineers and Designers to the Next Generation of Products

NEEDHAM, Mass.-Tuesday 27 November 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- PTC (NASDAQ: PTC) today announced that it has acquired Frustum Inc., an advanced generative design software company, for approximately $70 million. Frustum’s technology for generative design—an approach that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to generate design options—is a transformative addition to the PTC Creo portfolio.

Based in Boulder, Colorado, Frustum offers patented desktop and cloud-based engineering software that enables designers and engineers to go beyond the limits of their personal experience by leveraging powerful AI capabilities that guide the discovery of high-performance, next-generation product designs.

“PTC is pushing the boundaries of innovation with this acquisition,” said Jim Heppelmann, president and CEO, PTC. “Creo is core to PTC’s overall strategy, and the embedded capabilities from ANSYS and, later, Frustum will elevate Creo to a leading position in the world of design and simulation. With breakthrough new technologies such as AR/VR, high-performance computing, IoT, AI, and additive manufacturing entering the picture, the CAD industry is going through a renaissance period, and PTC is committed to leading the way.”

Frustum complements PTC’s strategic relationship with ANSYS, which was announced at LiveWorx in June 2018, and will bring analysis upstream to the very start of the design process. With embedded Frustum and ANSYS capabilities, Creo will be able to recommend design approaches using generative design, guide the user through the iterative design process using ANSYS Discovery Live, and ultimately validate the full product design at scale using the broader ANSYS Discovery suite. With these capabilities embedded in Creo, engineers will have unmatched capabilities to rapidly drive product innovation.

“This acquisition is a natural step for PTC and its customers,” said Jeff Hojlo, program director, product innovation, IDC. “AI and machine learning (ML) are widely discussed as two of the most impactful technologies of the future. For design, engineering, and R&D, the potential positive impacts of complementing the development process with AI and ML are astounding: lowering cost of quality (which is currently 20-25 percent of annual revenue at the average manufacturer), improving product success rate (which remains very low with more than 80 percent of products failing), and improving time to market and time to revenue by meeting customer needs accurately the first time.”

The Power of Generative Design

With generative design, engineers can interactively specify the functional requirements and goals of their design, including preferred materials and manufacturing processes—and even indicate key design parameters that take into consideration purchasing decisions, manufacturing capacity, supply chain status, and regional-required product variances. The system then uses AI and powerful high-performance computing techniques to present design alternatives for consideration as a starting point or as a final solution. By removing the constraints of human imagination and experience, engineers will be able to interact with the technology to create superior designs and innovative products more quickly.

Generative design is appealing to PTC’s vast customer base as they seek ways to:

    Increase engineering productivity
Improve innovation and conceptual design exploration
Develop higher-performance designs that are lighter weight, with improved durability
Optimize new products for improved manufacturability, reduce material costs, and decrease manufacturing cycle times
Create complex geometries optimized for additive manufacturing
    Deliver better products faster

The Impact of Artificial Intelligence

Integral to Frustum’s technology is a powerful AI component that learns, evolves, and, ultimately, performs key tasks, including:

Providing valuable feedback to a designer early in the design phase
Optimizing designs for multiple objectives simultaneously and offering a designer with multiple novel design alternatives, which enables companies to substantially reduce engineering cycles
Modifying designs to manage multiple requirements and constraints, physics, materials availability, manufacturing processes, and design objectives
Automating testing the outcomes of the design with other enterprise insights, including costing, supply chain, and quality data

American College of Cardiology recommends empagliflozin as preferred SGLT2 inhibitor for adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease in new Expert Consensus Decision Pathway

INGELHEIM, Germany & INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-Tuesday 27 November 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- A new Expert Consensus Decision Pathway issued by the American College of Cardiology (ACC) recommends empagliflozin as the preferred SGLT2 inhibitor for its proven benefit in reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease. The recommendation, part of the ACC’s first Expert Consensus Decision Pathway on novel therapies for cardiovascular risk reduction in adults with type 2 diabetes, was released today and published online in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.1 Empagliflozin is marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY).

The recommendation of empagliflozin is based on evidence from the landmark EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial, which investigated the effects of empagliflozin compared with placebo when added to standard of care in adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.2 In addition to the ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway, the American Diabetes Association® (ADA) and European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) recently published a Consensus Report recommending SGLT2 inhibitors, such as empagliflozin, to help manage cardiovascular outcomes in patients with type 2 diabetes.3 Empagliflozin is also the only SGLT2 inhibitor recommended in the ADA 2018 Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes for reducing the risk of cardiovascular death in people with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.4 Worldwide, more than 50 treatment guidelines have been updated to include findings from the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial® in their endorsement of type 2 diabetes treatments with proven cardiovascular benefits.5

“People with type 2 diabetes are at increased risk of serious cardiovascular complications and events, even when their blood sugar is under control, which is why a focus on reducing cardiovascular risk in people with diabetes is critical,” said Waheed Jamal, M.D., Corporate Vice President and Head of CardioMetabolic Medicine, Boehringer Ingelheim. “The ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway, along with the Consensus Report from the ADA and EASD, all now recommend that comprehensive cardiovascular care for adults with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease includes a treatment shown to improve cardiovascular outcomes in this population, such as empagliflozin. These recommendations reflect a fundamental shift in the management of type 2 diabetes, moving beyond glucose control to a broader strategy of comprehensive cardiovascular risk reduction.”

The 2018 ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway emphasises the need for a collaborative treatment approach by healthcare providers to reduce cardiovascular risk and improve survival in people with type 2 diabetes, a growing public health epidemic.1 People with diabetes are up to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those without diabetes, and cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death associated with diabetes.6,7

The ACC Expert Consensus Decision Pathway’s recommendation of empagliflozin, along with those of the ADA and EASD, represents a shift towards a comprehensive and team-based approach for managing the overall health of people with type 2 diabetes. The ACC encourages cardiologists to work as part of a broad healthcare provider team including primary care, internal medicine and endocrinology physicians, as well as nurse practitioners, physician assistants, diabetes educators and pharmacists, to improve the care and outcomes of people with type 2 diabetes.1

“The EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial® ushered in a new era for managing type 2 diabetes. Now, cardiovascular risk reduction is prioritised as a primary goal of diabetes management,” said Sherry Martin, M.D., Vice President, Medical Affairs, Lilly. “With the adoption of the ACC’s Expert Consensus Decision Pathway and ADA-EASD Consensus Report, the cardiology community will have an important role as part of the healthcare team managing cardiovascular risk in people with type 2 diabetes.”

About EMPA-REG OUTCOME® (NCT01131676)2
EMPA-REG OUTCOME® was a long-term, multicenter, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of more than 7,000 patients from 42 countries with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

The study assessed the effect of empagliflozin (10 mg or 25 mg once daily) added to standard of care compared with placebo added to standard of care. Standard of care was comprised of glucose-lowering agents and cardiovascular drugs (including for blood pressure and cholesterol). The primary endpoint was defined as time to first occurrence of cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke.

The overall safety profile of empagliflozin was consistent with that of previous trials.

About Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
More than 425 million people worldwide have diabetes, of which over 212 million are estimated to be undiagnosed.8 By 2045, the number of people with diabetes is expected to rise to 629 million people worldwide.8 Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, responsible for around 90 percent of diabetes cases in high-income countries.8 Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body either does not properly produce, or use, the hormone insulin.8

Due to the complications associated with diabetes, such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure and obesity, cardiovascular disease is a major complication and the leading cause of death associated with diabetes.9,10 People with diabetes are two to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes.10 In 2017, diabetes caused four million deaths worldwide, with cardiovascular disease as the leading cause.8 Approximately 50 percent of deaths in people with type 2 diabetes worldwide are caused by cardiovascular disease.7,11

Having a history of diabetes at age 60 can shorten a person’s life span by as much as six years compared with someone without diabetes. And having both diabetes and a history of heart attack or stroke by age 60 can shorten a person’s life span by as much as 12 years compared with someone without these conditions.12

More than 50 guidelines have been updated to endorse type 2 diabetes agents with proven cardiovascular benefits since 2016, including a recent Consensus Report initiated by the American Diabetes Association® and European Association for the Study of Diabetes, recommending that, in patients with type 2 diabetes and established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, SGLT2 inhibitors (such as empagliflozin) or GLP1 receptor agonists with proven cardiovascular benefits are recommended as part of glycaemic management.13,14

About Empagliflozin
Empagliflozin (marketed as Jardiance®) is an oral, once daily, highly selective sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and the first type 2 diabetes medicine to include cardiovascular death risk reduction data in the label in several countries.15,16,17

Inhibition of SGLT2 with empagliflozin in people with type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar levels leads to excretion of excess sugar in the urine. In addition, initiation of empagliflozin increases excretion of salt from the body and reduces the fluid load of the body’s blood vessel system (i.e. intravascular volume). Empagliflozin induces changes to the sugar, salt and water metabolism in the body that may contribute to the reductions in cardiovascular death observed in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial.

Mobile Operators across Middle East Set for Global 5G Leadership, According to New GSMA Reports

GCC Operators Set for Commercial 5G Launches in 2019; Supportive Regulatory Environment and Availability of Spectrum Key to Driving 5G Adoption Across Region

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates-Monday 26 November 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Arab States1 are set to be global leaders in the deployment of 5G networks, with all six markets expected to launch 5G mobile services in the next two years, according to two new reports released today at Mobile 360 Series – MENA. The reports from GSMA Intelligence – ‘The Mobile Economy: Middle East and North Africa 20182’ and ‘5G in MENA: GCC operators set for global leadership’ – highlight that pioneering mobile operators in the GCC Arab States are expected to launch 5G networks commercially from 2019, driving innovative new services across the region and spurring future growth. By 2025, 5G will account for 16 per cent of total connections in these markets.

“Backed by proactive government support, mobile operators, particularly in the GCC Arab States, have been quick to establish the foundations for global leadership in the deployment of 5G technology, moving rapidly from trials to early commercialization,” said John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA. “While we are encouraged by their progress to date, it is imperative that the region’s governments create a regulatory environment that allows 5G to flourish, including releasing sufficient spectrum, so that businesses and citizens can fully enjoy the innovative new services that 5G will deliver, as well as the resulting socio-economic benefits.”

Policy Central to Realising 5G Digital Future

The reports encourage policymakers to establish spectrum roadmaps that commit to releasing sufficient quantities of spectrum across all frequency ranges to enable operators to meet coverage and capacity. They further note that governments should implement taxation policies that could improve affordability and boost digital inclusion, and adopt an approach to licence renewals that enables operators to make long-term investment decisions rather than maximising government revenue.

A Region of Rapid Subscriber Growth, Increased Smartphone Adoption

There are currently 381 million unique mobile subscribers (Q2 2018) across the MENA region, accounting for 64 per cent of the population.3 However, it is a diverse region in terms of market maturity, encompassing the advanced GCC Arab States, where 77 per cent of the population on average are mobile subscribers, alongside other North African countries such as Comoros, Djibouti and Somalia, where subscriber penetration is below 30 per cent.4 Between 2017 and 2025, the MENA region as a whole will see the fastest subscriber growth rate of any region except Sub-Saharan Africa, growing to reach 459 million or 69 per cent of the population.

The number of smartphone connections across MENA stands at 332 million as of Q2 2018, accounting for just over 50 per cent of total connections in the region. This is expected to continue growing at an average annual rate of 8 per cent to reach 587 million smartphone connections by 2025, or just under three-quarters of total connections across the MENA region. The UAE remains a global leader in terms of smartphone adoption, second only to Singapore, with smartphones accounting for 85 per cent of total connections. High mobile broadband usage and smartphone adoption has also resulted in more people across the region using data services such as IP messaging and using their mobile phones to watch online video.

Immersive Digital Entertainment Presents Revenue Opportunities in the Early 5G Era

The reports highlight how operators will offer enhanced mobile broadband services in early 5G deployments, while applications and services for enterprises will be introduced later. There will be significant opportunities for operators across new consumer-oriented services such as immersive reality, eSports and enhanced in-venue digital entertainment at stadiums and music venues, for example. Further, video consumption on mobile devices will evolve to include newer augmented reality and virtual reality applications that will make content even more immersive and data intensive.

Mobile Contributing to Jobs and Economic Growth

In 2017, the mobile industry contributed approximately $165 billion to the MENA region’s economy, equivalent to 4 per cent of GDP. This contribution is expected to increase to over $200 billion by 2022 as countries in the region benefit from improvements in productivity and efficiency brought about by increased take-up of mobile services. The mobile ecosystem also supported more than 1 million jobs in 2017, which includes workers directly employed in the ecosystem and jobs indirectly supported by the economic activity generated by the sector. Further, the mobile industry made a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector, with more than $17 billion raised in 2017 in the form of general taxation.

Bio Farma : Sharing experience in acquiring WHO Pre-qualification to OIC Member Countries

JAKARTA, Indonesia-Monday 26 November 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- M. Rahman Roestan, President Director of Bio Farma, has been invited to speak on Bio Farma’s experience in acquiring WHO pre-qualification for Vaccines, at The First Meeting of Heads of National Medicines Regulatory Authorities (NMRAs) held by National Agency of Drug and Food Monitoring (BPOM) of Indonesia.

Rahman said,“currently Bio Farma has more than 12 vaccine products WHO pre-qualified. In order for a vaccine manufacturer to have its vaccines WHO pre-qualified, it is mandatory for the National Regulatory Agency (NRA) of the country to be accredited by WHO. This verifies that the NRA is functional, meeting all the indicators outlined by WHO. I take pride that our National Agency for Drug and Food Monitoring (BPOM) is WHO accredited”.

Penny Lukito, Head of BPOM added, "There are only seven OIC members states having the ability to manufacture vaccine". Penny stated that Indonesia is very fortunate to have Bio Farma a state-owned enterprise and the sole vaccine and antisera manufacturer for human use. The company has not only supported the National Immunization Program through the supply of vaccines, but exported its products to more than 140 countries as well, of which 49 are OIC member countries.

Rahman added, “Numerous OIC member countries such as Morocco, Tunisia, Turkey have procured vaccines from Bio Farma, including Saudi Arabia. Apart from exporting our vaccines, we are also open to discuss technology transfer for down stream production of vaccines to support OIC member countries in attaining self-reliance on vaccines. Joint research could another option for collaboration”.

The meeting will be held in response to the strong urge among OIC Countries to be self-sufficient and ultimately self-reliant in drugs including vaccines, through, among others, strengthening of the countries’ National Regulatory Authorities.

Bio Farma is a state-owned producer of Vaccines and Antisera, currently developing into a Lifescience company. More than 140 countries have used Bio Farma Vaccine products, especially developing countries, and 49 of them are countries that are members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. Bio Farma is the largest vaccine manufacturer in South East Asia.
