Contemporary Art Greets Passengers at Paris-Orly Airport in the Form of a Giant Fresco by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac

PARIS - Thursday, November 26th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Because an airport is a place of encounters and emotion, Aéroports de Paris (Paris:ADP) (OTC Pink:AEOPF) has partnered with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac to transform the airport experience of passengers, partners and Paris-Orly airport employees into giant-size images. These sketches are now displayed on the 3,200 m² façade of the Paris-Orly South Terminal.

"This work of contemporary art illustrates the degree of intimacy linking the airport to all those who give it life, holding important moments of their past. It embodies our aim for continuous improvement in our customer service and echoes the desire of Aéroports de Paris to work on radiating French culture. This collaboration with Jean-Charles de Castelbajac, a renowned artist, is the material expression of our commitment", stresses Augustin de Romanet, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Aéroports de Paris.

After spending 10 days putting up the work of art, on 26 November Jean-Charles de Castelbajac put the finishing touches to this giant fresco, installed over the whole length of the Orly South Terminal façade. Covering a huge expanse measuring 17 metres in height and 202 metres in width, an area equivalent to that of just over 16 tennis courts, this decoration is made up of a set of 10 drawings by the artist, with the addition of "Bienvenue" in enormous letters and the name of the event, "Welcomestories".

To collect these personal accounts, Aéroports de Paris had asked its passengers and partners to tell their best stories linked to the airport. Homecomings, separations, anniversaries and marriage proposals have been interpreted by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac and transformed into a monumental work of art that now adorns the South Terminal façade.

Welcome Stories, a participatory project

In August and September, participants were invited to send their stories to the website, welcomestories.aeroportsdeparis.fr

Amongst all those received, Jean-Charles de Castelbajac chose 10 of them, which he has illustrated: the first time that a grandfather sees his grandson arriving from Réunion, reliving the magic of trips to the airport as a child while visiting the Orly terraces, the emotion of a warm family welcome during a trip to Iran, etc. The artist has had no end of choices from these emotion-packed tales.

The passengers whose stories have been chosen will receive a reproduction of Jean-Charles de Castelbajac's drawing, signed by the artist once the fresco has been put in place.

Whilst the fresco was being put up and until it was finally revealed, Internet users were able to discover bit by bit the Orly South terminal façade's new decoration on the Aéroports de Paris Facebook page www.facebook.com/aeroportsdeparis

Aéroports de Paris builds, develops and manages airports, including Paris-Charles de Gaulle, Paris-Orly and Paris-Le Bourget. In 2014, Aéroports de Paris handled around 93 million passengers and 2.2 million metric tonnes of freight and mail at Paris-Charles de Gaulle and Paris-Orly, and more than 41 million passengers in airports abroad. Boasting an exceptional geographic location and a major catchment area, the Group is pursuing its strategy of adapting and modernising its terminal facilities and upgrading quality of services; the Group also intends to develop its retail and real estate businesses. In 2014, Group revenue stood at €2,791 million and net income at €402 million. Registered office: 291, boulevard Raspail, 75014 Paris, France.

GSMA Commends Allocation of Additional Spectrum for Mobile Broadband at WRC-15

GENEVA - Friday, November 27th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- John Giusti, Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA, commented on the outcome of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 (WRC-15) and its identification of additional spectrum to support next-generation mobile services:

“We welcome the decisions taken at WRC-15 to identify critical new spectrum to secure the future of the mobile internet. After weeks of intense treaty negotiations, governments agreed three new globally harmonised spectrum bands, representing a major step forward in meeting the growing demand from citizens worldwide for mobile broadband. Global harmonisation of spectrum bands through the WRC process is key to driving the economies of scale needed to deliver low-cost, ubiquitous mobile broadband to consumers around the globe.

“The GSMA applauds the strong support from governments in all regions for the global harmonisation of 200MHz of the C-band (3.4-3.6GHz) to meet capacity requirements in urban areas1. We are also pleased by the decision to globally harmonise the L-band (1427-1518MHz), a mid-frequency band that provides an ideal blend of coverage and capacity capabilities.

“WRC-15 also took the decision to expand the 700MHz band (694-790MHz) from a regionally harmonised band in the Americas and Asia Pacific to a global one. By now making this spectrum available in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, governments have taken an important step in improving the reach of critical mobile broadband services.

“The GSMA particularly commends the vision shown by many countries seeking the flexibility to use the sub-700MHz band (especially 610-694/698MHz) for mobile broadband. Not only can legacy television services in the band be delivered far more efficiently using less spectrum, but the reality is that consumer habits are evolving as video content is increasingly accessed via mobile devices. Allowing both mobile and broadcasting in the band gives these governments the ability to respond to the changing needs of their citizens.

“The sub-700MHz band is now available for mobile in markets covering more than half the population of the Americas and, in addition, several major markets within the Indian subcontinent announced their intention to use part of this band for mobile broadband. This WRC-15 decision represents a significant milestone in building momentum towards global harmonisation.

“Looking further into the future, we acknowledge the agreement at WRC-15 for a new agenda item for WRC-19 to identify high-frequency bands above 24GHz for 5G mobile services. This is a critical first stage in the journey towards a new wave of mobile innovation, considerably faster than existing technologies and driving a hyper-connected society in which mobile will play an ever more important role in people’s lives.”

Notes to Editors

1 The 3.3-3.4GHz and 3.6-3.7GHz portions of the C-band are also available regionally and in key markets.

World Radiocommunication Conference 2015 Decides Satellite Spectrum is Central to Future Vision for Global Connectivity

Long-term Delivery of Innovative Satellite Services Are Assured a Pivotal Role Alongside Wireless and Other Complementary Technologies

GENEVA, Switzerland - Friday, November 27th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The world’s governments resoundingly affirmed a clear vision for the importance of many vital and irreplaceable services provided today over satellite. They also agreed on a clear framework for future access to satellite spectrum for innovative satellite communications. This was accomplished by agreeing to preserve and create new additional valuable spectrum for fixed and mobile solutions used to support a multitude of video, television and data services, to expand Internet access, and to bridge the “Digital Divide” for billions of people around the world.

The inter-governmental decisions in support of satellite spectrum were made during the conclusion of the International Telecommunication Union’s (ITU’s) World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC), where the agreements reached by national administrations reflected a comprehensive strategy in which the unique value proposition of satellite-based connectivity is an integral part of a portfolio of synergistic technologies.

“WRC-15 has been a turning point in the global recognition of the value of satellite services for the future. We commend the national administrations – and the WRC Chairman, Mr. Festus Daudu – for their commitment to connectivity for all,” said a joint statement of a coalition of associations representing the satellite industry. “These decisions provide the stability necessary for the entire satellite industry to fully leverage its strengths in support of the vision expressed by the WRC delegates.”

Among the key decisions made during WRC are the following:

L-band: WRC-15 avoided identification of the L-band spectrum, which is used by mobile satellite service operators around the world, for IMT. The Conference identified the band 1427-1518 MHz for IMT, requesting the ITU-R to determine the technical measures to ensure compatibility with the mobile-satellite service operations in the adjacent band (1518-1559 MHz).

C-band: WRC-15 reconfirmed the need to protect critical fixed-satellite service (FSS) services throughout the world in this unique band. The lower 200 MHz of the C-band downlink frequencies (3400-3600 MHz) were identified for IMT in ITU Regions 1 and 2; In Region 3 a handful of countries will sign a footnote allowing potential IMT use of these 200 MHz, while the vast majority of the region will continue satellite use of this band with no change. A position of “No Change” was adopted in the band 3600-4200 MHz, and only in Region 2 was a footnote agreed which identified IMT for a few countries in the 3600-3700 MHz band. A “No Change” decision means that administrations have recognised the vital and widespread use of those frequency bands by satellite services. Anywhere that IMT is deployed, it will be subject to adherence to strict protection requirements with neighbouring countries. In addition, the Conference declined to consider a proposal for IMT systems in the C-band uplink frequencies (5925-6425 MHz).

Ku-band: In order to address a spectrum imbalance in Ku-band spectrum, WRC-15 identified additional spectrum for FSS systems between 10-17 GHz. A downlink allocation in the 13.4-13.65 GHz band in Region 1 (EMEA) was approved by the Conference. In addition, an allocation in the 14.5-14.8 GHz was approved in several countries around the world.

Future bands for 5G: The Conference decided that no globally harmonised bands for the fixed satellite service, mobile-satellite service and broadcast-satellite service in C, Ku or Ka band would be included in the scope of a new WRC-19 agenda item, which aims to identify new frequency bands for future IMT/ 5G use. Throughout the deliberations, multiple administrations in every world region expressed strong opposition to studying the Ka band for IMT/5G, again confirming the Conference’s confidence in satellite being a key player in the future digital eco-system.

ESIMs: The Conference adopted new regulations to facilitate the operation of “Earth Stations in Motion” (ESIMs) in part of the Ka-band satellite spectrum (19.7-20.2 GHz and 29.5-30 GHz). ESIMs operating in this band provide satellite broadband connectivity to mobile terminals, such as on ships and aircraft. The new regulations adopted by WRC-15 will facilitate the global roaming of such terminals, while protecting other services and applications from interference.

Other: WRC-15 adopted several agenda items for future conferences that will spur growth in the satellite industry. Studies were approved for WRC-19 for additional FSS spectrum in 51.4-52.4 GHz. In addition, the conference adopted a future agenda item for WRC-23 for additional satellite spectrum in the 37.5-39.5 GHz. Also, in a hotly contested debate, the Conference adopted a Resolution which sets the path towards allowing the use of FSS links for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS).
