Tez Financial Services and Green Girls Organization Selected as Winners of Visa Everywhere Initiative: Women’s Global Edition After Worldwide Search

Two top women entrepreneurs from the FinTech and Social Impact challenges received $100,000 (USD) each and access to Visa’s network to grow their companies.

SAN FRANCISCO-Tuesday 2 July 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Visa (NYSE:V) recently hosted the Visa Everywhere Initiative (VEI): Women’s Global Edition, marking the first time the program has focused on organizations with at least one woman founder or co-founder from around the world who are changing the world by solving business and social challenges.

The new global competition spotlighted the underrepresented millions of women business and social impact leaders, tasking them to solve a FinTech and – for the first time – a Social Impact challenge for a chance to win $100,000 per challenge along with mentorship, access to Visa products and programs, and exposure to key participants in the commerce ecosystem. Nearly 1,300 applicants applied to participate in the program.

Just before the FIFA Women’s World Cup France 2019™ kick-off, 12 finalists from six regions pitched their innovative solutions to a panel of judges. Two finalists, Tez Financial Services from Pakistan, represented by its co-founder and business head, Naureen Hyat, and Green Girls Organization from Cameroon, represented by its founder, Monique Ntumngia, were selected as the winners of the FinTech and Social Impact challenges, respectively.

“As the worldwide rate of female entrepreneurship continues to rise, Visa is giving a voice to the collective strength of women who are creating impact in the global economy, spinning the fly wheel of innovation from the bottom up – and we will continue to do so through investments and partnerships that enable women-founded businesses to thrive,” said Marianne Mwaniki, Senior Vice President of Social Impact at Visa. “All of the finalists in this global Visa Everywhere Initiative are testaments to how diverse, women-owned businesses can grow, uplifting economies in communities across the globe, and we intend to provide them a platform to create connections and opportunities to succeed.”

The Women’s Global Edition is an extension of the established VEI program, and reflects Visa’s commitment to investment in women entrepreneurs. Since the inception of the VEI in 2015, more than 6,000 startups have participated in 24 innovation programs and have collectively raised more than $2.5 billion in funding. This year, Visa expanded the competition to include a global challenge for organizations with at least one woman founder to submit solutions that tackle the vast societal and business challenges facing social impact landscapes.

The FinTech competition measured how applicants leveraged their companies’ unique ability to solve or transform consumer and/or commercial payment experiences locally, regionally or globally. The FinTech winner Tez Financial Services from Pakistan, represented by Naureen Hyat, is the first fully digital financial institution in Pakistan providing frictionless financial services to the unbanked and under-banked via a smartphone application.

“The Visa Everywhere Initiative has been a remarkable opportunity for Tez, Pakistan and our cause to enhance financial inclusion,” said Naureen Hyat, Co-founder and Business Head of Tez Financial Services. “It has not only served as a driver for growth but has also allowed us to tap into the connectivity and numerous partners at Visa. I’m honored to be a part of such a thriving group of women entrepreneurs. All of these finalists have already achieved so much – I’m excited to continue to be a witness to our growth collectively beyond this competition.”

The Social Impact Challenge sought women-led businesses around the world who are supporting sustainable and inclusive livelihoods and strengthening their local or regional economies. The Social Impact winner Green Girls Organization from Cameroon, represented by Monique Ntumngia, is a non-governmental organization that trains women and girls to harvest and create renewable energy from the sun and bio-waste.

“This opportunity will allow Green Girls to reach more women and girls and expand our footprint to provide renewable energy,” said Monique Ntumngia, Founder of Green Girls Organization. “Visa’s network and support will not only help my organization scale but will provide a number of rural African communities sustainable energy sources from the sun and bio-waste – creating a ripple effect of impact.”

In addition to Green Girls and Tez, the following entrepreneurs competed for the two top prizes:

FinTech Finalists:

WeCashUp of France, represented by Annicelle Kungne, is the largest Pan African payment gateway that enables eCommerce companies to accept mobile money, cash and cards online in 36 African countries.

They are building a coalition customer loyalty program through their network of more than 15,000 merchant partners whereby users can earn and easily redeem points using linked debit or credit cards.

Boehringer Ingelheim Expands Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (NASH) R&D Pipeline With New First-in-Class Compound from Yuhan Corporation

•    Boehringer Ingelheim focuses on the development of next generation NASH treatments that target all three key drivers of the disease - steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis

•    Collaboration aims to develop first-in-class dual agonist (GLP1R/FGF21R agonist) for NASH

•    Yuhan Corporation to receive up to USD 870 million in upfront and success-based development and commercialization milestones, excluding royalties

INGELHEIM, Germany & SEOUL, South Korea-Monday 1 July 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Boehringer Ingelheim and Yuhan Corporation today announced a collaboration and license agreement for the development of a first-in-class dual agonist for the treatment of NASH and related liver diseases that combines GLP-1 and FGF21 activity in one molecule. The collaboration brings together Yuhan Corporation’s expertise in FGF21 biology, obesity and NASH with Boehringer Ingelheim’s pharmaceutical expertise and commitment to bringing innovative medicines to patients with cardiometabolic diseases.

NASH often starts with the accumulation of fat in the liver, giving rise to inflammation and finally leading in many patients to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis. It has an especially high prevalence among obese and diabetic patients and is an area of high-unmet medical need with no treatments currently available. Boehringer Ingelheim believes that in many cases approaches targeting one of the features of NASH will not be able to achieve the desired resolution of NASH in patients with advanced stages of the disease. Thus Boehringer Ingelheim has built a comprehensive program to develop next generation therapy approaches targeting all three key drivers of the disease - steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis.

Preclinical evidence suggests high efficacy, when combining the gut-derived hormone GLP-1 with FGF21. The dual agonist (GLP1R/FGF21R agonist) is expected to reduce liver cell injury and hepatic inflammation by resolution of steatohepatitis as well as having direct antifibrotic effects and complements Boehringer Ingelheim’s R&D portfolio in NASH adding another potential first-in-class opportunity.

“We are excited about this new opportunity which adds to our longstanding and successful partnership with Yuhan Corporation,” says Dr. Michel Pairet, member of Boehringer Ingelheim’s Board of Managing Directors with responsibility for the Innovation Unit. “This partnership brings us closer to next generation treatments for patients with NASH,” adds Pairet.

”We look forward to working jointly with Boehringer Ingelheim, with its strong track record of bringing new treatments to patients with cardiometabolic disease. Boehringer Ingelheim’s clinical expertise will now be applied to the development of this drug which has the potential to make a real difference for patients with NASH,” says Jung Hee Lee, CEO and President at Yuhan Corporation. “This molecule, which is a fusion protein utilizing the long-acting (HyFc) technology of Genexine, has been developed in-house by Yuhan Corporation. Not only is our collaboration with Boehringer Ingelheim on this molecule Yuhan’s first external partnership with biologics, it is also the very first out-licensing of biologics targeting NASH from Korea,” adds Mr. Lee.

Boehringer Ingelheim has a long history of excellence in the discovery and development of medicines for patients with cardiometabolic diseases. It has established a broad portfolio of marketed products for thromboembolic diseases, type 2 diabetes, acute myocardial infarction, hypertension, and cardio-renal risk reduction. The cardiometabolic diseases pipeline extends beyond type 2 diabetes and anticoagulation with a focus on innovative drugs for the treatment of the devastating consequences of diabetes as well as contributing factors like obesity.

Yuhan Corporation has over many years been a commercial partner for selected Boehringer Ingelheim cardiovascular and metabolic products in Korea. Under the terms of the agreement Yuhan Corporation will receive an upfront and near term payments of USD 40 million and is eligible to receive up to USD 830 million in potential milestone payments plus tiered royalties on future net sales.

BioCell Technology Announces BioCell Collagen® Skin Aging Clinical Trial Poster Presentation at ASN Nutrition 2019

Dietary supplementation with BioCell Collagen® significantly reduced facial lines and wrinkles, crow’s feet lines/wrinkles, increased skin elasticity and cutaneous collagen content, and decreased skin dryness compared to placebo.

IRVINE, Calif-Monday 1 July 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BioCell Technology, LLC, a branded dietary ingredient supplier, today announced the presentation of The Effects of Skin Aging Associated with the Use of BioCell Collagen® in Healthy Adult Females: A Randomized, Double-blind, Placebo-controlled Clinical Trial. These results were presented in a poster session at the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) Nutrition 2019 on June 9, 2019, and are available at http://bit.ly/2WzhODi. This poster will be published as part of the proceedings of Nutrition 2019 by ASN. The manuscript of the study will be published in the online and print versions of the peer review journal Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine (ATHM).

The goal of the study was to determine if a correlation existed between the effects of the dietary supplement, BioCell-Collagen®, with changes associated with skin aging. The study was a 128-female subject, 12-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Participants were randomly assigned to an intervention or a placebo. The intervention consisted of twice daily 500mg oral administration of BioCell Collagen®, a novel hydrolyzed chicken sternal cartilage extract dietary ingredient composed of a naturally-occurring matrix of collagen type-II peptides (≥300 mg), chondroitin sulfate (≥100 mg), and hyaluronic acid (≥50 mg).

For the 113 participants completing the study, BioCell Collagen® supplementation compared to a placebo resulted in:

Significantly reduced facial lines and wrinkles (P = .019) and crow’s feet lines and wrinkles (P = .05)
Increased skin elasticity (P = .008) and cutaneous collagen content (P < .001) by 12%
Improved indicators associated with a more youthful skin appearance based on visual grading and wrinkle width (P = .046)
Decreased skin dryness and erythema.
No difference existed between the supplement and the placebo for skin surface water content or retention. The supplement was well tolerated, with no reported adverse reactions.
“We are very excited to publish the findings of our largest study to date, which further supports the efficacy of our flagship dietary ingredient BioCell Collagen®. Human clinical studies continue to be the gold standard for substantiating dietary supplement claims and we take pride that our licensed partners can take advantage,” said Suhail Ishaq, president of BioCell Technology.

The latest study validates an earlier pilot study that demonstrated similar results- Schwartz SR, Park J. Ingestion of BioCell Collagen®, a novel hydrolyzed chicken sternal cartilage extract; enhanced blood microcirculation and reduced facial aging signs. Clin Interven Aging. 2012; 7: 267-273.

“An impressive example of how a series of studies, capped by a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, supports a ‘beauty from within’ claim in healthy women. Even more impressive was that the results remained statistically significant even after an intention-to-treat analysis was performed that included the few subjects that dropped out of the study. Such an analysis is seen in only about 15-20% of randomized, placebo-controlled blinded clinical studies published in leading medical journals,” said Alexander Schauss, PhD, FACN, CFS, Senior Director of Research at AIBMR Life Sciences, and the corresponding author.

“It is important that the supplement industry conducts research at the pinnacle of good science and this includes a double blind, properly populated study like this one,” said Stephen Schwartz, President and CEO of International Research Services, Inc.
