YOKOHAMA, Japan-Wednesday 23 September 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Resorttrust, Inc. (TOKYO:4681) has announced that The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama will open for business on September 23.
One of the most famous hotels in Honolulu, The Kahala Hotel & Resort, has continued to be a favorite destination of guests from around the world for more than half a century. The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama represents a first step toward growing the Kahala brand worldwide.
Yokohama, at just 30 minutes by car from Haneda Airport, is very conveniently located, and is a community rich in history and with a unique culture. It is also considered to be an up and coming global city.
But there are also perfectly appropriate reasons for Yokohama to be the first place in Japan to open a Hawaiian hotel brand. In 1868, Japan’s first emigrants set off from the Osanbashi area in Yokohama to what was then the new paradise known as Hawaii. Some decades later, it was also Yokohama where the Meiji government in Japan welcomed its first state guest, King David Kalakaua from the Kingdom of Hawaii. Building on the connections between Yokohama and Hawaii, and embodying a spirit of aloha, The Kahala Hotel & Resort Yokohama will carry on the Hawaiian hospitality tradition, and looks forward to welcoming guests as ohana, the Hawaiian concept that includes both family and treasured friends.
Every effort was made to adhere to the philosophy of the Spirit of Kahala, which has carefully cultivated the Kahala brand since The Kahala was opened in Hawaii’s Kahala region 56 years ago. A new Kahala story, with a wide diversity of faces, will therefore be offered to everyone from Yokohama as well.
NOTE: The Spirit of Kahala, an offshoot of the spirit of aloha, is the source for the Kahala brand. It shows profound respect for the lives, culture, and traditions of local peoples.

ASPIRING ARAB INNOVATORS PITCH IDEAS TO QATAR FOUNDATION’S STARS OF SCIENCE JURY
Young innovators strive to impress judges
Doha, Qatar-Sunday 27 September 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]
Stars of Science officially kicked off the search for this year’s Top Arab Innovator by choosing 22 applicants to advance to the selection episode, where eight innovators will get the chance to transform their ideas into reality.
Focusing on collaboration and encouraging open dialogue amongst fellow innovators, the show’s alumni took center stage during the casting episodes to help candidates prepare for the jury’s questions and act as an initial screening for novel ideas. After delivering a short presentation to new and old competitors, potential contestants then had a one-on-one session with each jury member to further explain their concepts.
“Stars of Science encourages young Arab innovators to pursue greatness while upholding the highest standards in scientific integrity and excellence,” said Dr. Khalid Al-Ali, Stars of Science jury member. “The passion and dedication we have seen throughout these casting rounds are proof of the innovative spark that the show has lit in the Arab region throughout the past decade.”
In its opening episodes, many projects presented to the jury focused on environmental sustainablity. Ideas included a machine that turned inedible dates into paper, and a method for replacing the current chemical agricultural pest control with ultrasonic waves to produce healthier harvests.
Inventions focusing on using modern technological methods to solve contemporary issues also featured prominently. These included an algorithm-based application to detect and warn the user from fake news or misinformation on social media platforms, and smart glasses equipped with cameras to better the life of the visually impaired by transforming images into verbal directions.
Several inventors proposed significant improvements to existing devices, such as a smart baby formula device that both disinfects and readies bottles for use in a time-efficient manner, and a machine that enhances the usage of inhalers by ensuring the correct dosage is consumed by the patients.
The casting episodes also featured an increasing number of female participants. This rise reflects a reality in the Arab region where women are challenging existing stereotypes and holding positions in the scientific fields in their respective countries.
During the selection episode, viewers will discover which contestants will make the top eight and continue their journeys on Stars of Science. They will work at the state-of-the-art shared innovation space at Qatar Science & Technology Park, part of Qatar Foundation, where their inventions will undergo different stages during the elimination rounds, including proof of concept, design, prototyping, and testing.
The contestants will defend their projects in front of the jury, guests, and experts, battling to secure a place in the Grand Final where they will compete for a share of $600,000 in seed funding.
The program is airing on eight TV channels around the world and online. For a full broadcast guide to Stars of Science Season 12, visit www.starsofscience.com

Mr. Salim Ahmed Alawi Al-Ibrahim promoted as Acting Deputy Group CEO and Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Aideed as Acting GM
Muscat, Oman-Sunday 27 September 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]
Oman’s largest cement manufacturer, Raysut Cement Company (RCC), today announced a significant corporate revamp bringing on board young leaders from within the organization to new roles at key positions of the top management.
In a statement, the Muscat Securities Market (MSM)-listed company said bringing new leaders to steer the company has been done at a time of crucial regional and global expansion of Raysut into new and diverse markets of Eastern Europe, East Africa and Asia, which necessitates strong and competent young managers who can complement the company’s vision to be one of the leading global cement players.
“We are confident that the new young leaders will bring in fresh perspectives to Raysut’s growth and help catalyze the company’s target to raise output to 10 million tonnes by 2022 and to eventually scale it up to 20 million tonnes in the near future, said RCC CEO, Mr. Joey Ghose.
As part of the management restructuring, Mr. Salim Ahmed Alawi Al-Ibrahim has been promoted as Acting Deputy Group CEO, who will now support and complement the leadership of Raysut’s Group CEO, Mr. Joey Ghose. Mr. Salim has been with Raysut since 2014 and has been contributing significantly to the company in his earlier role in the sales department.
Mr. Mohammed Ahmed Aideed has been promoted as the Acting GM of Raysut. Mr. Mohammed, armed with over 10 years of experience in sales and marketing, has been working with Raysut since 2009, starting his career as a sales representative and moving up to managerial positions subsequently. Prior to the current role he has been promoted to, Mr. Mohammed had also held senior positions such as Head of Marketing and Business Intelligence, Acting CEO and Head of Business Support.
“The two young professionals are taking on the new mantles at a time when Raysut has already expanded its footprints into new markets and they will have a robust role to play in this dynamic business scenario,” added Mr. Ghose.

CORRECTING and REPLACING SES Becomes Microsoft Azure Orbital Founding Connectivity Partner
SES’s proven low-latency MEO managed services to be part of Microsoft’s new multi-orbit satellite connectivity integrated with Azure, promising optimized cloud application performance for O3b mPOWER customers
LUXEMBOURG -Wednesday 23 September 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]
CORRECTION...by SES
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Second paragraph of release dated September 22, 2020 should read: The first MEO and Earth Observation gateways will be located in the United States; in Phoenix, Arizona and Quincy, Washington respectively. (instead of ... located in Phoenix, Arizona, United States and Quincy, Western Australia respectively).
The updated release reads:
SES BECOMES MICROSOFT AZURE ORBITAL FOUNDING CONNECTIVITY PARTNER
SES’s proven low-latency MEO managed services to be part of Microsoft’s new multi-orbit satellite connectivity integrated with Azure, promising optimized cloud application performance for O3b mPOWER customers
SES today announced it has joined as the medium Earth orbit (MEO) connectivity partner for Microsoft Azure Orbital, Microsoft’s new managed service enabling network operators to communicate and control their satellite capacity, process data, and scale their operations directly within Azure. The integration is part of a multi-year agreement between the two companies that accelerates and expands SES’s use of Azure to significantly advance the digital transformation of the company’s services and operations as part of its cloud-first strategy.
As pioneers in Microsoft’s new cloud ecosystem in space, the two companies will make joint investments in Azure Orbital ground stations that SES will deploy and manage for the MEO and Earth Observation segments. The first MEO and Earth Observation gateways will be located in the United States; in Phoenix, Arizona and Quincy, Washington respectively.
In anticipation of O3b mPOWER, SES’s next-generation MEO communications system, SES and Microsoft will seamlessly co-locate several telemetry, tracking and command (TT&C) systems and data ground stations with Microsoft’s Azure edge sites.
The integration of both SES and Azure networks will provide O3b mPOWER customers with “one-hop” access to their Azure cloud services. The option to route over Microsoft’s global network and inject value-added, cloud-based managed services such as enhanced security, SD-WAN, and other network functions into the service chain will mean that SES customers can enjoy improved network performance, speed-to-market, flexibility and scalability they need to capitalise on new revenue opportunities.
O3b mPOWER is SES’s next-generation MEO communications system. It is currently under construction and on track for launch in 2021. The high-throughput and low-latency satellites as well as automated and intelligence-powered ground infrastructure will deliver managed services of hundreds of Mbps up to multiple Gbps per second to customers.
Today’s agreement builds on the work started last year between the two companies, which added SES as an Azure ExpressRoute partner and SES as the first satellite operator to implement Open Network Automation Platform (ONAP) using NFV technology on Azure.
“In the last 12-18 months, our focus has been to accelerate our customers’ cloud adoption plans. We are pleased to have found an ideal partner in Microsoft with its new Azure Orbital system. This agreement leverages both companies’ know-how – SES's experience in satellite infrastructure and Microsoft’s cloud expertise – and are building blocks in developing new and innovative solutions for the future,” said JP Hemingway, CEO of SES Networks. “In addition to building and managing EOS gateways for Microsoft, we are also thrilled that we will be co-locating, deploying and operating our next-generation O3b mPOWER gateways alongside Microsoft’s data centres. This one-hop connectivity to the cloud from remote sites will enable our MEO customers to enhance their cloud application performance, optimise business operations with much flexibility and agility needed to expand new markets.”
“Our launch of Azure Orbital will enable our partners’ customers to on-ramp their data into Azure where it can immediately be processed with market-leading data analytics, geospatial tools and machine learning services, adding another layer of automation and intelligence in their networks,” said Jeff Cohen, Partner Program Manager, Azure Networking at Microsoft Corp. “In addition, SES’s O3b mPOWER communications system is proof of SES’s cloud-first strategy, focusing on industry standards and orchestration, and aligns with our connectivity vision for the future, and we are delighted to be kicking off this project.”

Best Buy, McKinstry, Real Betis, Schneider Electric, and Siemens Sign The Climate Pledge
SEATTLE-Saturday 26 September 2020 [ AETOS Wire ]
The Climate Pledge, a commitment co-founded by Amazon and Global Optimism, calls on signatories to take urgent action to meet the Paris Agreement 10 years early
Signatories are implementing real, science-based, high-impact changes to their businesses, including deploying renewable energy, investing in sustainable buildings, and mobilizing supply chains to reach net zero by 2040
(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today, Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) and Global Optimism announced that Best Buy, McKinstry, Real Betis, Schneider Electric, and Siemens have joined The Climate Pledge, a commitment to be net-zero carbon by 2040—a decade ahead of the Paris Accord’s goal of 2050.
These new signatories to The Climate Pledge agree to:
Measure and report greenhouse gas emissions on a regular basis;
Implement decarbonization strategies in line with the Paris Agreement through real business changes and innovations, including efficiency improvements, renewable energy, materials reductions, and other carbon emission elimination strategies;
Neutralize any remaining emissions with additional, quantifiable, real, permanent, and socially-beneficial offsets to achieve net-zero annual carbon emissions by 2040.
“From hurricanes to forest fires, climate change is leading to very real, negative impacts to our daily lives even sooner than scientists expected. Every company has a role to play in fighting climate change, and we welcome these new Climate Pledge signatories who are stepping up and committing to reach net-zero carbon by 2040,” said Jeff Bezos, Amazon founder and CEO. “They are showing important leadership in accelerating the transition to a low carbon economy to protect the planet for future generations.”
To achieve a net-zero carbon footprint, Best Buy will continue to measure, manage and decarbonize its emissions, increase the energy efficiency of its operations, and invest in carbon offsetting projects. Since 2009, the company has reduced its carbon emissions by 56% through investments in LED lighting, controls systems and hybrid vehicles. The company has also undertaken investments in utility-scale solar generation like the Best Buy Solar Field, which powers the equivalent of 260 Best Buy stores each year. Through its previously established science-based target, the company aims to reduce emissions in its operations by 75% and help customers reduce product emissions by 20%, saving the company $5 billion on utility costs by 2030. And as it looks to the future and meeting the 2040 requirements of The Climate Pledge, Best Buy’s focus areas may include fleet electrification, energy efficiency, renewable energy investments, and the development of carbon offset projects.
“We are a purposeful, values-driven company, with a long history of environmental work that includes meaningfully reducing our carbon footprint and helping our customers do the same,” said Corie Barry, Best Buy CEO. “We are proud to take the next step by committing to The Climate Pledge. Simply put, our customers and employees expect this degree of commitment from us and the planet demands it.”
McKinstry, a U.S. engineering, construction and energy services firm, has a three-fold plan. McKinstry will reduce its net greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2025 and reach net-zero carbon by 2030. McKinstry will use its impact and influence to support community organizations who are leading approaches to preserve the planet. It will also work with building owners and operators to deliver more buildings that aim for zero-carbon, energy-sharing, high-efficiency operations, and optimal building-to-grid interactions. This leads to occupant behavior that helps to transform buildings from blind energy consumers to valuable assets that serve the grid.
“Buildings account for 40% of energy use in the United States and 36% globally,” said Dean Allen, McKinstry CEO. “Emerging, complex building technologies are unlocking the potential to radically reduce carbon emissions and operate buildings with startling efficiency. It will take working together across industries to deploy these technologies and decarbonize the global building stock and dramatically improve energy efficiency. Working with other Climate Pledge companies, I believe we can meet this goal and drive real, lasting change.”
Real Betis, a professional football club based in Seville, Spain, has measured its carbon footprint and is implementing plans to reduce its emissions while at the same time purchasing carbon offsets from certified climate protection projects. In an effort to reduce its carbon emissions, the club is installing a “smart illumination system” in its 60,000-capacity Estadio Benito VillamarÃn stadium and is attempting to reduce its reliance on single-use plastic. It is also focused on serving as a role model for its fans: for the upcoming season, Real Betis is developing a list of sustainable initiatives to help fans reduce carbon emissions.
“At Real Betis, we are committed to tackling climate change,” said Ramón Alarcón, Real Betis general business director. “We are also helping to raise awareness to address the climate crisis, by engaging with our players and fans. We understand that climate change is a threat to the livelihoods and the wellbeing of everyone on the planet, and we are committed to doing our part. We are very excited to be the first football club in the world to join this program, and we can’t wait to work with Climate Pledge companies to ramp up our efforts.”
Fighting climate change has long been at the heart of Schneider Electric’s strategy and innovation roadmap, much ahead of its COP 21 Carbon Pledge endorsement. For Climate Week 2020, Schneider is accelerating its own carbon neutrality commitments and reaffirming that it will be carbon neutral in its operations by 2025 and have net-zero (no offset) emissions by 2030. It is also promising to have all of its products be carbon neutral by 2040, with full end-to-end neutrality, as well as having a net-zero supply chain by 2050. Schneider’s corporate pledge was amongst the first +1.5 degree Celsius roadmaps approved by the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi).
“Sustainability is at the core of everything we do at Schneider, and digital innovation is critical to address the challenge of climate change,” said Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Schneider Electric chairman and CEO. “We will progress faster towards a sustainable and inclusive world if we progress together. This is why we joined The Climate Pledge – to deliver carbon neutrality.”
Siemens’ goal is clear: all production facilities and buildings worldwide are to achieve a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. To reach this objective, Siemens is focusing on four levers: green energy procurement, improving energy efficiency, decentralized energy systems (e.g. photovoltaics on factory rooftops), and the electrification of its car fleet. Besides, Siemens has initiated a new Managing Board compensation system that is also linked to sustainability targets, such as CO2 emissions reduction targets.
“Climate change is one of humanity’s greatest challenges of our time. Businesses need to lead the way towards accelerated decarbonization. In September 2015, Siemens became the first global industrial company to commit to achieving carbon neutrality for our global operations by 2030. Today, we reemphasize our commitment to this goal and are looking forward to joining forces with other Climate Pledge companies to help ramp up global efforts,” said Joe Kaeser, Siemens AG president and CEO.
“The Paris Agreement set out a unifying roadmap for all countries and all people to address the climate crisis by taking action. The IPCC has informed us that we cannot warm the planet beyond 1.5 degrees Celsius and that the faster we achieve net-zero emissions, the better,” said Christiana Figueres, the UN’s former climate change chief and Global Optimism founding partner. “By joining The Climate Pledge, signatories are not just making a statement of commitment to the future, they are setting a pathway to significant actions and investments that will create jobs, spur innovation, regenerate the natural environment and help consumers to buy better starting now. This is what leadership looks like in resetting the global economy.”
Last year, Amazon and Global Optimism co-founded The Climate Pledge, a commitment to reach the Paris Agreement 10 years early and be net-zero carbon by 2040. Eleven organizations have now signed The Climate Pledge including: Amazon, Best Buy, Infosys, McKinstry, Mercedes-Benz, Oak View Group, Real Betis, Reckitt Benckiser (RB), Schneider Electric, Siemens, and Verizon—sending an important signal that there will be rapid growth in demand for products and services that help reduce carbon emissions.
